ALEC provides training to police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and others, such as staff and caregivers seeking information by using curriculum and videos designed to enable participants to recognize situations involving children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and to foster a deeper understanding of ASD. The goal of ALEC training is to complement, not replace, previous training and to provide additional tools to use in accessing the risk of a situation.
ALEC is a program of The Arc of South Norfolk Family Autism Center. All ALEC instructors have experience as EMT’s/First Responders and have a family member with ASD.
Basic EMTs, advanced EMTs and paramedics earn 3 continuing education hours for attending this training. This training is important and also appropriate for caregivers and employees who work with individuals with ASD to collaborate with First Responders.
This training is free, but requires pre-registration.
