Meet David

For nearly three decades, David has been a valued member of The Arc of the South Shore community. Since joining the Community-Based Day Services (CBDS) program at age 22, he has continued to grow, develop new skills, and build meaningful connections. Now at 50 years old, David's journey is a wonderful example of personal growth, resilience, and the impact of having opportunities to learn and thrive.

David attends The Arc's day program three days a week and takes great pride in becoming more independent. "I like coming to The Arc because I have learned skills that help me to be more independent," he shared. Outside of the program, David stays busy working several days a week at Russelectric and volunteering in the community through The Arc's CBDS program. He also enjoys spending time with his family, watching YouTube and Power Rangers, and expressing his creativity through art. Using markers and colored pencils, David creates beautiful pieces of artwork that showcase his talent and imagination.

One of David's most meaningful contributions to The Arc community is his passion for helping others. Diagnosed with Down syndrome at a young age, David began learning American Sign Language (ASL) as a child to help him communicate. Today, sign language remains an important part of his life. He uses ASL to communicate with his niece, who is deaf, and has even taken the initiative to teach some of his peers at The Arc how to sign. By sharing this skill, David helps others communicate more effectively, express themselves, and build stronger connections with the people around them.

David also serves as a Peer Human Rights Officer at The Arc, a role that reflects his commitment to making sure others feel supported, respected, and included. Helping people recognize their own abilities and build confidence is something David feels strongly about. "I want to help others discover their hidden abilities and give them self-confidence about themselves," he explained.

David's positive outlook is one of the qualities that makes him so special. While he has experienced challenges throughout his life, including times when he felt like an outsider and faced bullying because of his disability, he has learned the importance of resilience and believing in himself. Rather than viewing Down syndrome as something that holds him back, David considers it a gift. He embraces the unique perspective it gives him and is proud of who he is.

David also recognizes that everyone's experience with Down syndrome is different. By sharing his own story, he hopes to encourage others to embrace their individuality, find their inner strength, and recognize their own potential.

When asked what message he would like others to take away from his story, David shared words that reflect the kindness, confidence, and perspective he brings to the community every day:

"You are not an outcast. You fit in exactly as you are. Find your inner strength and embrace who you are."

Through his creativity, compassion, determination, and willingness to help others, David continues to make a meaningful impact at The Arc of the South Shore. We are grateful to have him as part of our community and proud to celebrate all that makes him who he is.
